I Thought I was a Big Horse!

LuLu, our quarter horse mare, loves to stand over the scrub brush to scratch her belly and keep the flies away, and little Belle must have thought this was a great idea. But instead, it turned out to be Belle’s moment of truth and we all know reality can bite sometimes.

With a big heart, a big personality and a big attitude (when needed), it’s not surprising that Belle thought she was a big horse. I’m only guessing that as she casually walked away, she was hoping that this would be one of her best kept secrets!

Im Going Home!

One very happy little mini is home again after a 4 day stay in ICU. Mouse started showing classic signs of colic over Labor Day weekend and was medically managed for an impaction colic at UC Davis. He did great and with lots of IV fluids and enteral feeding, Mouse recovered from this scary diagnosis. Luckily he showed no signs of enteroliths or sand in his belly. Our goal is for a full recovery and getting his life back to normal over the next week. We are so happy to have him home again!

Back in the Human World

Sunny looks and calls to her buddy who has been momentarily taken away for his dental, hoof trim and vaccines. Little does she know that her turn is coming up very soon. I’m so happy to see her looking and doing so well. :)

(For those of you who know our little pony Molly, you know she would be very impressed, and envious, of Sunny’s very natural head toss!)

Bye-Bye Bamboo!

A huge thank you to our amazing crew who really put their all into tackling this huge project! They can only be described as incredible and we are so appreciative, and feel a whole lot safer with the bamboo gone! BHR has been very focused on minimizing our fire risk as much as possible and the bamboo backing on to the neighborhood was a major concern - we were all sighing with relief at the end of the day. Great job guys!

Project : No More Bamboo

Above is just a small section our bamboo ‘forest’! Standing near it can almost be overwhelming! It’s tall, it’s dense and it makes a rustling noise with the slightest breeze. And, there are the critters who call home - we won’t even go there! Anyway, Martin evaluated it today, and made a starting point against the fence, so in the coming weeks we should see some great things happening. This is a huge project but it will keep the neighborhood a lot safer. It’s a great example of thinking twice before you plant bamboo. It will keep giving for decades!

A Beautiful Monday Morning at Blue Horse Rescue

What a beautiful start to the week! Happy ponies, a cool breeze and a peaceful start to the day! Everyone was eager to come out into the pasture and crow hop, run and kick up their heels all before settling into their breakfast - you can’t ask for more than that! Happy horses = Happy Humans!

Mouse is a new addition to Molly and Belle’s exclusive ‘girl gang’ and he’s fitting right in and really enjoying it. Fingers crossed he has found his spot.

And the Round Pen Goes Up!

Big day today! The round pen is going up again! Thanks to Ty and Dean it has happened! Obviously I’m very excited about it and have been looking forward to a safe and fun time with the minis in the round pen for a while. While it may look easy in the pics, it took commitment on what turned out to be a very hot and dry Saturday. 94 degrees is not the best weather for working with these heavy metal panels, but Ty and Dean did it and I’m super grateful and very pleased with the outcome.

Lots of panels were carried and laid out in just the right spot, and then of course, you have find the middle and make some adjustments along the way.

It was a great moment when the first two panels remained upright and the ground was level - no shovels needed to smooth the way for an even round pen. That would have been no fun at all!

And here it is - now we just need some footing and we are ready to have some fun.

While Ty, Dean and I were thrilled, Molly and Belle found it interesting but just kept trotting right past the gate. Not too interested with the people still around but they did eventually make their way inside to check it out before taking off to go do what little horses do. A huge thank you to Ty and Dean for volunteering their time today to make this a reality!
